There is a common suspicion among critics about the credibility of Golf as a sport.

For sure, Golf is a sport, and there are many valid reasons to support this claim.

Definition of sport
Before showing any supports of our claim, let us discuss some of the definitions of sport.
Knowing all these definitions will help us to support our conviction.
The first definition of sport is from the oxford dictionary. According to the Oxford Dictionary, sport is “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment”
Now, let us find out the definition of sport from Wikipedia. According to Wikipedia, ‘’Sport includes all forms of competitive physical activity or games which, through casual or organized participation, at least in part aim to use, maintain or improve physical ability and skills while providing enjoyment to participants, and in some cases, entertainment for spectators’’.
Oxford dictionary claims that a sport needs to be competitive, which means a player or a team needs to compete with another. Another claim it depicts is that athlete needs to use physical energy.
I believe Golf has fulfilled every requirement of the Oxford Dictionary for considering it as a sport.
Wikipedia also supports the claim of Oxford; besides, it has added two more claims thatsport needs to ensure.it needs to provide entertainment for both spectators and players, as well as, it needs to maintain or improve physical ability and skills.
Now, I have a question for you. Why do you think that Golf is not providing you all the fuels for considering it as a sporting event?
Why is Golf not a sport?
Now, let us talk about some of the other reasons why people believe that Golf is not a sport.
- The first thing that they talk about most is that Golf does not require enough physical exertion.
- Another reason is that playing Golf requires less activity than other sports like football or baseball.
- They also claim that golfers are not a real athlete.
- There is no limitation of age.
- Inclusion in the Olympic games.
Why these claims are not valid
The first claim of the critics is that Golf does not require enough physical exertion.
This claim will not last in this present situation. If you look at the present condition of the Golf, you will notice that players are very much devoted to the game.
If a player needs to complete a whole 9 hole with a golf bag in his shoulder, he will make a lot of physical movement.
The major thing is that you need to do all the activity slowly whereas other sports will be fast.
This should not be a reason for claiming Golf as not a sport.
Secondly, a golfer needs less activity while playing Golf is the next claim of the critic.
Actually, completion of the whole course requires a lot of time, and that is why people kind of feel like the activity is not that much in a golf game. All the players need to implement a great force while hitting every stroke. Very often they feel a strain after completing a course. aStrain does not happen without any kind of physical activity.
And walking is a great exercise than anything. A golfer needs to walk a lot of distance while completing a whole course of the game. How can you say that golfing requires less activity then?
Thirdly, they say that golfers are notreal athletes like all other athletes in different sports.
I would have taken for granted if it was ten to twelve years back. Things have changed dramatically. Tiger woods have made a huge change in the mindset of every player playing golf. Professional golfers are now more focused on keeping themselves fit.
Professional golfers are now fit and sporting like many other athletes of different sports or sometimes even more fit.
Fourthly, the claim is about age limitation. Golf does not have any age limitation whereas all other sporting events will somehow have age limitation and players after a certain period of time need to retire.
Well, age should not be a factor in considering Golf as a sport. As long as a player can believe that he can produce a great result, he should continue. There are many examples available in different sports where players are playing after a certain period of time.
Finally, Golf was not included in any Olympic events since 1904. This becomes a shred of strong evidence for considering Golf as not a sporting event.
But, believe it or not, this decision was controversial, and many critics have criticized the decision for a long period of time.
Finally, in 2016, the authority has withdrawn its decision and added Golf in the list of their sporting events.
Ewan Murray says,” Golf should loudly celebrate Olympic inclusion, then tinker with formats”.
The inclusion of Golf in Olympic should now stop the critics.
Most of the claims depicted by the critics are somehow moderate but not that strong for not considering Golf as a sport.
Golf is surely a sport for its competitive and entertaining settings.
Spectators and players have been enjoying Golf for a long period of time, and in recent times the quality of the fitness of every player has also increased to a greater extent.
